SEPTEMBER 30 - GRAY, OVERCAST DAY

Ron made figs with melted goat cheese for breakfast. The figs were reaching their "use by date" because we didn't have a baking sheet. But the previous day we had purchased some aluminum foil, so were able to use that. But, then we had a difficult time with the oven again. We never could figure out the broiler.

Somehow, they didn't come out as good as at home. Usually they are delicious.

We thought it would be a good day to go over to the laundromat that's been here as long as we remember, and only a short walk through a nearby parking lot. We got all the laundry separated and ready, but somehow we never made it.

Ron wanted to have lunch before laundry, so we walked across the way for a late lunch at the Mukkefuck Bistro, which has been a staple in our Garmisch experience for many years. For one thing, they serve a wonderful breakfast, even though they don't open until 11 AM. That used to seem too late for breakfast, but now I think it might be just about right. When I was here alone once, that place became my "lokale". The waitress knew me and that I always wanted "grunerveltliner". It was a comfy, casual, safe feeling place for a woman alone.

It was also the sight of the infamous slip on the ice when Ron suggested a "short-cut" and I fell on black ice and was laid up for four days.

Even though it was a bit chilly, and threatening rain, we sat in the beer garden. The waitress informed us that the kitchen was closed (at 1:30)  and warm cooking was not available except for kurbiscremesuppe (pumpkin soup). They are famous for their enormous salads and baguettes, so it wasn't an issue. Ron had the pumpkin soup and said it was delicious. Unfortunately, he  discovered a small orange rubber band in his soup! Luckily, he was able to spit out before swallowing. In recompense, the waitress gave him a small beer. I had a warm chocolate cake with chocolate ice cream. Melt in your mouth. But I also wanted to eat a bit of ham and cheese from Ron's salad, and the two didn't go together very well. I usually don't eat desserts, but there are very few German foods I care for, so that is my substitute.

We came back to the apartment, and I ended up having a nap that lasted much too long. Since the laundry closed at 5 PM, and didn't open until Monday 10 AM, we couldn't get the washing done!

The day was over before we knew it!
